What is Wing Chun?
Wing Chun is a practical style of Kung Fu. The term Kung Fu is a Chinese phrase that simply means, “Hard work and practice”. It is hard work and practice that transforms the study of Wing Chun into an effective means of self-defense.
Wing Chun is an ancient Chinese martial art that was originally intended for martial combat. It can also be used as a means of self defense or more accurately stated, self protection. Practiced correctly, it is a fluid, tactile, close range art which makes it especially effective in confined spaces such as an elevator, hallway, staircase or crowded urban area.
Wing Chun employs the body’s natural weapons including strikes, low kicks, knees and elbows. Unlike what the movies portray, Wing Chun does not use high kicks, complex movements, or acrobatics. It’s shapes, structure and movements are relatively simple and rely primarily on gross motor skills and the use of our core (center) versus finer motor skills that quickly diminish while under the adrenaline induced stress of a violent attack.
Wing Chun does not require you to memorize hundreds of different techniques because Wing Chun is based upon concepts and principles. It is a fight science taught in progressive student grades and practiced until responses become reflex. Our traditional Wing Chun training combined with modern combative training using pads, focus mitts and other other training apparatus, allows you to safely train while still practicing the aggression required for self defense.
Wing Chun is based upon the laws of science, physics and anatomy. It does not rely on muscle or brute strength but the natural structure, reflexivity and core power of the human body. The result is a dynamic form of self-protection that allows the average person the reasonable means to quickly escape or to defend themselves if escape is not possible.
